Welcome to DataLight. If this site looks minimal, well, that's the idea.
DataLight's mission is to allow quick and easy access to critical information on the internet for everyone without unnecessary frills. As you could guess from our name, we build "data light" services to reduce the amount of data users need to spend.
Yes, we used the word spend, because mobile data is expensive.
We aim to build websites that can:
- Run smoothly on even the cheapest or oldest smartphones,
- Be accessible even with a janky connection, and that
- Use as little data as possible.
Some of the paradigms we are interested in also include:
- Data-free sites, otherwise known as reverse data billed sites,
- Local-first sites, and
- Progressive Web Apps (PWAs).
And we don't want to stop at websites or custom apps. We want to reach users through the channels and apps they already have on their phone. Think: WhatsApp/Telegram/(whichever messaging application) chat interfaces, USSD interfaces, SMSes, mesh networks, even traditional radio... Whatever tools that would reliably let users access the information they need.
Something else you should know is that we're passionate about privacy and user experience. That means we don't ever want to build websites with banner-ridden ads, track and sell users' data, or anything along those lines.
